My History with Writing
Posted by Teresa | Under Writing Lessons Friday Jan 2, 2009You may look at my blog writing and enjoy the posts I write. However, I am not skilled on the technical side of writing, in my opinion. I would like to learn more of the technical side of writing to become a better writer.
I have enjoyed writing since middle school. I was offered a spot in my school’s creative writing booklet to write a short story or poem. I had decided to write a poem. Although I don’t have the poem with me today, I remember it was something about a box and the words at the end, “and I am trapped inside”. The poem was about not being able to escape the box because I didn’t feel I could be myself. Yes, feelings of a teenager.
As I got older I just figured I would write poems when I had a chance, however, it wouldn’t be a career for me. Then in college, I had majored in marine science for my first year. Wow, what a wrong turn the decision was for me. Calculus and physics kicked my butt and I was placed on academic probation. I decided if I was going to stay in college, I had better change my major. So I did switch it…to journalism. I didn’t receive my degree for journalism for a few different reasons however, looking back, I realize my passion for writing has followed me throughout my life.
So now I am here and really want to learn more about writing.
I want to share one thing I have heard from talking with other writers and authors.
I have asked them, “Why did you choose to write your book or article about ?” Most of the authors or writers respond, “I am passionate and know about the subject.”
I resonate with the response because I am passionate about writing and sharing with others about writing. This is what I know. I want to help others while learning myself about how to write better. I truly enjoy reading books and exploring the different writing styles of the author. I also want to share an author’s journey of writing and becoming an author.
So the question goes back to you.
What are you passionate about and what do you know about? Answer the question and then write about it.
Why? It is a great way to start writing because the steps or process doesn’t have to require doing much research because you have been through it and you know the answers.
Writing is a choice. Some may disagree with me. However, I believe my writing is a choice. I held off for many years wanting to write but not writing. I am so glad I have found my way back to writing because it does make me happy.
And I enjoy helping other by celebrating their books and spreading the word about their books—that is why I enjoy literary promotion so much! It combines my passions of reading and writing.
Over the course of this new year, I will be writing more about writing. I am going to be sharing my experiences of my learning here on my blog. So as I am learning others can learn too.
Please let me know your thoughts, suggestions, ideas, as I travel this journey with my writing.
First of all, let me say I absolutely LOVE the new look of your site. It’s clean and crisp and has a nice, subtle writer’s look.
I look at writing as a form of expression. I am a very outspoken person and I use my writing to say what others often won’t or cannot express themselves.
I appreciate your help with writers like me and I look forward to our collaboration in 2009!
Great stuff! I have been writing myself since I was 11 years old and never looked back. It is just in my blood.
I do write what I am passionate about and much like Beverly, most of what I write is off the cuff and many people don’t approach it with the boldness and transparency that I do.
For me writing was not a choice, it was a necessary reality. I say it like that because I used as a therapy and I still do the same today. When I write I am healed by it because I know it will help someone else too.
Love this post.
