Happy 2009 everyone—Now what?
Posted by Teresa | Under Writing Lessons Thursday Jan 1, 2009Ok, so it is a new year—what are your plans?
Now, I am not saying you have to know EXACTLY what you are going to do each day however, do you have some plans of those goals you would like to accomplish?
For Christmas my husband asked me to get a book at the store for him. For those who know my husband, he doesn’t ask for many things. He is quite happy with going along and doesn’t “want” for material things. So when he asked me for this book, I of course, jumped at the chance to buy something for him.
The book is by Geoff Colvin called Talent is Overrated. Eddie said he said Geoff on the Charlie Rose show (great show!).
The premise of the book is about the fact of people having these thoughts of people like Tiger Woods and other world athletes and artists as having talent. Geoff brings up the fact of the countless hours, days and years each person has invested in practicing, drills, and trails over and over again to perfect their craft.
Another discussion Geoff brings up in the book is about planning for the future. He writes about how typists and muscians look further down the page when they are doing their work so I can anticipate what is coming next.
And he makes the point those who are “deemed” talented do the same. They tend to look further ahead then others—just enough ahead to give them the “edge”.
He writes,”Knowing what lies ahead for them they prepare for it and thus perform better.” And continues a bit further down the page (90)…”This is not about fortune-telling or hiring Nostradamus or an astrologer. Much of the power of looking further ahead comes from the simple act of raising one’s gaze and getting a new perspective, and doing it not once or occasionally, but using practice principles to do it often and get better at it”.
Whoohoo! I so like what Geoff is saying here. Just taking the bit of extra time to do what others aren’t doing can make all the difference in your life and your business.
He also writes about planning further ahead by gauging what your environment will be like 5, 10 or even possibly 15 years from now. I know that I have pushed away the idea of planning ahead too far because how can you see what anything will be like in the distant future. However, what I read in this is about staying on your toes and being conscientious of what your industry is up to and where it may be headed. Become knowledgeable about upcoming trends, products, programs, etc to see if there is something you can do or provide to your clients.
What are your plans for the new year? Have you mapped out the steps in order to accomplish these plans? Just start with one thing and complete it to the finish. Then go onto the next. You can do it.
Year 2009 is mine and yours to accomplish great things.
A few neat things I plan to accomplish in 2009:
–Start my own internet radio show. It is started next Tuesday, January 6th at 10am. The show is for writers and authors, new and experienced.
–Showcase my own book fair – The 1st Annual Book Fair Blitz will happen January 25th from 1-4pmET at the Heritage Hotel in St. Petersburg, FL. Portion of the proceeds will benefit and raise funds for the Florida Literacy Coalition.
–Write my first book—a business book.
–Move into a new house.
–Attend writing courses online and local.
Please share your plans in 2009 in the comment section and we can support each other toward our accomplishments.
