Business Lessons from a child
Posted by Teresa | Under Writing Lessons Saturday Oct 13, 2007A few weeks ago my daughter came up to me excitedly and said, “Mommy, I got Daddy a job! I got Daddy a job!” Of course, these highlighted statements puzzled me, so I continued with my inquiry by asking, “Oh, really, please tell me about how you did that?” She said, smiling from ear to ear, “Well, see Mom, the principal was talking with the janitor Mr. Jones (I don’t believe that is his name, however, I don’t remember it) and I over heard them talking about how the floors really needed to be cleaned.
Just a bit of background here…my husband owns a floor cleaning/restoration business called Morr Services, Inc. and has been int the floor cleaning industry for over 25 years.
Mr. Jones was telling the principal that the floor machine to clean the floors was in the shop and he was waiting for it to be fixed. Well, my daughter says, “I knew that was my opportunity”.
Well, mommy, you know, I didn’t interrupt them while they were talking but I waited until the principal came by our table at lunch and I politely got his attention and told him that Daddy owns his own floor cleaning business, Morr Services, Inc. and has been in the floor restoration industry for over 25 years. I also told him that Daddy could do the job right because he had the expertise to complete the job properly.
Needless to say, after all of that, I couldn’t do anything except to be happy and proud of my daughter. Additionally, she really impressed me and she reminded of a few great lessons to help any entrepreneur or business owner:
And do not shy away from bringing your kids into your entrepreneurial world because it could:
Teresa,
I love this story…especially that she didn’t interrupt and respectively waited until the right opportunity…that’s a hard concept for a lot of adults to get…especailly telemarketers…oh…wait…that’s a whole ‘nother post. LOL!

Teresa,
Out of the mouth of babes comes the words of intelligence and determination. I can just picture your daughter doing that. Your points on bringing children to the business table are wonderful. I’ve been telling my daughter she needs to get a marketing degree so she can help her mom with the PR. That’s a GUARANTEED JOB—
Great post!
Isn’t it wonderful how our children are so aware of what’s going on around them? Children prove to us how we can realize our potential without fear. They put 2 +2 together and come up with results. Great story!
Beverly,
My daughter constantly is amazing my husband and I with her wit and her logical thinking at her age. And she just loves to learn about everything…in fact she just completed management training where she learned how to compose a business plan and develop a mission statement. I am SO proud of her because there were only a set number of kids to be selected for the program, however, I think it should have been offered by all the students. Great values of responsibility and leadership to learn when they grow up.
Cindy,
Thank you for your comment! Yes, kids are truly remarkable in what they come up with and they can teach adults things we forget or don’t think about. My daughter sometimes will say to me, “Mom…sometimes grown ups just need to listen to kids!” and she is right. when we allow them to feed their intelligence, and we allow them to branch out and feed their thoughts…we will get amazing results AND probably learn something in the process!
Teresa,
What a great story! Knowing me, I would be shy or intimidated to do such a thing and here a child has the courage to promote her dad’s business! I love it.
It’s a great lesson – be more like a child – don’t worry about what people will think or any of those other insecurities that adults have and just go for it!
Thanks for sharing!
