My case study about Power Networking might be featured on Entrepreneur.com - woohoo!

I am so excited about this great opportunity that presented itself to me. Well, for me, I don’t feel things just happen. Things to me, happen for a distinct reason and on purpose -whether good or bad.

Anyway, getting back to the great opportunity for me being possibly* on Entrepreneur.com. Ponn Sabra of Empower Women Now conducted this special post asking other women entrepreneurs about their experience with Power Networking and there was a deadline of 48 hrs to submit it to her.

Well, this is what I sent to her: *cross your fingers for me or help me manifest this happening for me*

Networking can be such a “powerful” tool, if used correctly and that is what Empower Women Now and what your book focus on for all women entrepreneurs.
For me, networking is about being yourself while placing your best attributes that the client is looking for, right in front of them. I have not had issues networking. For me, I enjoy meeting new people and socializing to get to know them.
Oh - that is probably one of the biggest things about networking that is very important—-listen to others and what they have to say before telling them about you. Wouldn’t you agree, Ponn?
I have experienced the abrasive networking personality type, where the focus is on them and not about getting to know anyone else at the networking event. This type of networking personality will start immediately telling the rest of the people what their “specials” are and how great the products are…when all along, they didn’t inquire about the rest of the people in the room or even still, they may not have even said, “Hi!” or “How are you?”
Then I have also witnessed others, whom are not as abrasive, however, a bit too assertive in their approach to networking. This type of networking personality deem it necessary to keep asking others what they think about their own products or services without giving others time to absorb what they have said in the conversation. The assertive networking type reminds me of being at a mall where they ladies are “pushing the latest perfume” or a salesperson asks you every five seconds if they can help you with something. I like to be able to “browse” or “mingle” a little before buying something.
For me, I display the appreciative networking personality type. My biggest concern is when I network with others is to get to know about them and what they do. I do not go into a network event with selling on my mind. However, I go in with an excitement about meeting and getting to know other people. I try to show a genuine interest with the others I meet at any event. One tip I like to do write down something personal about each person they may have mentioned during the event. For example, maybe one person you meet mentions their enjoyment for boating. So, when you follow up with them at a later time (2-3 days is best), you can possibly bring up something about boating.

  1. Great contributions Teresa!

    1. Yes, the art and act of “listening” is very important in “Assertive networking” solely because you gain more information, and build relationships that is critical to your success in partnering with the other party! One must always see ones effort as relationship-building, not “promotion”!

I share samples of how to “Ask and You Shall Receive” in my July column found here.

    2. Yes, I truly dislike the salesperson on commission hording over me with multiple questions. I know what I want, I ask when I need help. But, what eerks me more is, if someone asks me many questions, I politely say “I’ll let you know”, then when I need him/her…they are NO where to be found! Urgh!

    3. “Appreciative” networking. hee hee a 4th type…well, by reading your definition, it is “Assertive networking” as best, using “appreciation” as a mode to building quality relationships.

I’m curious what your readers have to offer in terms of their perspective as well ;-)

  2. Thanks Ponn for this entry and yes, I would love to read more of some examples of my readers perspective…
Come on ya’ll (yes, I am a native Floridian, so I do say ya’ll) let me read all about it…
